Lenovo announced the first non-Valve gaming handheld to run SteamOS natively with its new Legion Go S. The handheld, which will also be sold in a Windows 11 Home version, is a more affordable alternative to the Legion Go which launched back in 2023.

Legion Go S is made from plastic and does not feature removable joysticks. It’s configurable with AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor or the new Ryzen Z2 Go which was co-developed with Lenovo. The Z2 Go processor features 4x Zen 3 cores with eight threads and a 4.3Ghz max boost alongside an RDNA 2 GPU with 12 cores, 10MB cache and 15-30W configurable TDP.

Lenovo is offering up to 32GB 6400MHz LPDDR5X RAM and 1 TB PCIe SSD on the high-end Legion Go S trims, while the baseline models will start with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

Legion Go S features a custom ColdFront tech cooling system with a large fan and large heat sinks to help keep thermals in check.

The handheld sports an 8-inch touchscreen with 1920 x 1200 px (WUXGA) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen features a 16:10 aspect ratio and 500 nits peak brightness.

There are 23 buttons on the device, including Hall Effect joysticks with RGB lighting. I/O includes 2x USB4 ports (Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0), a headphone jack and a microSD card slot. Legion Go S also features WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

Legion Go S weighs 740 grams and features a 55.5 Whr battery which supports 65W charging and comes with a bundled adapter.

Lenovo Legion Go S comes in Glacier White and Nebula Violet colors.

The baseline Ryzen Z2 Go-equipped Legion S running SteamOS will start at $500. That’s for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage model. Deliveries are planned for May.

The Windows 11 version with 32GB RAM and 1 TB storage will go for $730 and will be available later this month.
