Apple unveiled its annual roundups of top apps and games — that is, those most downloaded titles — across iPhone, iPad and Apple Arcade platforms Monday. The comprehensive year-end lists are featured on the App Store’s Today tab. They offer insights into user preferences across more than 30 countries and regions. And once again, free app and games dominate, overlapping with recent App Store Award winners.

Leading the pack in free apps for U.S. users are big-time entertainment apps like YouTube, Netflix, Max and Disney+, as well as bargain-shopping app Temu, Meta’s X.com competitor Threads and the ever-popular TikTok. The artificial intelligence revolution made its mark with ChatGPT claiming a high spot, along with the flagship Google app.

In the gaming sector, Block Blast! emerged as the most downloaded free game of 2024. The digital adaptation of the classic board game, Monopoly Go!, secured second place, while the persistent popularity of Roblox earned third position (and both won App Store Awards). Call of Duty: Warzone and Township rounded out the top five gaming titles.

Among most-popular Apple Arcade games were NBA 242K Arcade Edition, Sneaky Sasquatch and NFL Retro Bowl ’25.

Beyond the download charts, Apple highlighted its 2024 App Store Award winners, recognizing 17 exceptional apps and games that stood out for fostering creativity, personal growth and meaningful connections among users. These selections, curated by App Store Editors, represent excellence across the Apple ecosystem.

The data reveals a continuing trend toward free-to-download applications, with paid apps and games showing limited movement in their respective charts. This pattern reflects the broader industry shift toward freemium business models and in-app purchases rather than upfront payment structures.
