Apple is preparing to launch the much-anticipated iPhone 17 series next year, and early leaks suggest that there will be clear differences between the Pro models and the standard versions. As expected, these differences will likely center around hardware improvements, especially in areas like the camera and performance, continuing Apple’s tradition of offering more premium features in its higher-end models.
One of the standout features of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the 5x periscope telephoto lens. This lens, which first appeared in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, offers up to 5x optical zoom, making it a major upgrade for photography lovers. The iPhone 16 Pro also adopted this feature, but the standard iPhone 17 and the rumored iPhone 17 Air are unlikely to include it, further distinguishing the Pro models from their more affordable counterparts.
To ensure they can meet the demand for these advanced camera features, Apple’s supplier LG Innotek is reportedly investing a substantial $281 million (approximately KRW 375.9 billion) to expand its manufacturing capabilities. This investment is expected to help produce more camera components specifically for the Pro models, reinforcing the divide between the Pro and standard versions of the iPhone 17 series.
When it comes to performance, the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to be powered by Apple’s next-generation A19 Pro chip, paired with 12GB of RAM. This will allow for faster processing speeds and better multitasking, making it perfect for power users. In contrast, the standard iPhone 17 and the rumored iPhone 17 Air might feature either the A18 or A19 chip, but with only 8GB of RAM, offering a more budget-friendly experience without compromising too much on performance.
All models, regardless of the variant, are expected to feature 24-megapixel front-facing cameras, improving the quality of selfies and video calls. However, the iPhone 17 Air might have a 48-megapixel rear sensor, again highlighting the differences in camera quality between the Pro and standard models, with the Pro versions set to deliver more advanced features.
Looking ahead, Apple is also reportedly exploring the possibility of under-display Face ID technology, which could debut with its 2025 lineup. This innovation would be another step in Apple’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of smartphone technology and enhance the user experience.
The iPhone 17 series is shaping up to offer significant upgrades, with the Pro models boasting advanced features like the 5x periscope lens and enhanced performance, while the standard models provide essential improvements at a more accessible price point.
