Apple’s announcements for the fall 2024 Mac lineup featured new models of the iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro, all equipped with different versions of Apple’s M4 chip. The company plans to refresh its entire Mac range with M4 series processors within the next year, marking the first occasion that Apple has implemented a uniform chip generation across its entire Mac product line. Consequently, new M4 variants of the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro are anticipated to be released next year, reports MacRumors.

M4 MacBook Air
In March 2024, Apple introduced refreshed 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models featuring the M3 chip. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is set to commence production of M4 versions in preparation for a launch anticipated in early 2025. There are no design modifications expected for the MacBook Air models; the emphasis will be on the M4 chip. Additionally, the base model will now include a minimum of 16GB of RAM, following Apple’s upgrade of the base M3 model from 8GB to 16GB.
M4 Mac Studio
Apple intends to update the Mac Studio following the launch of the M4 MacBook Air in early 2025. This new version is expected to feature a variant of the M4 processor, potentially an M4 Ultra or Max chip. The existing model is available in M2 Max and M2 Ultra configurations. Considering that the Mac mini equipped with the M4 Pro chip and the latest high-end MacBook Pro models incorporate Thunderbolt 5 ports, it is highly likely that the Mac Studio will also include this technology.
M4 Mac Pro
Apple’s most recent update to the Mac Pro occurred in June 2023, during which the company introduced the M2 Ultra chip, thereby finalizing its shift from Intel processors. According to Mark Gurman, a new iteration of the Mac Pro is expected in the summer of 2025. Similar to the Mac Studio, this upcoming Mac Pro will not feature the M3 series. Instead, it will be outfitted with the top-tier version of the M4 chip, known by the codename “Hidra.” Based on the chip’s specifications, it may be categorized as either an “Ultra” or “Extreme” variant.

M4 Series Performance
The M4, similar to the M3, is manufactured using a 3nm process, incorporating advancements from Apple’s supplier TSMC to enhance both performance and power efficiency. Additionally, the M4 features an upgraded Neural Engine designed to accelerate artificial intelligence tasks. According to Apple, this is the most powerful Neural Engine the company has developed to date, capable of executing 38 trillion operations per second.
