Apple’s 2025 iPhone 17 lineup could feature major design changes

Apple could make big design changes to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max next year. One such change would be the surprising decision to ditch the Pro models’ titanium edges for aluminum.

A new report also suggests the Pro models will switch to an aluminum camera bump, replacing the current 3D glass design.

iPhone 17 Pro might say goodbye to titanium

Apple switched to titanium bands surrounding a 100% recycled aluminum frame with the iPhone 15 Pro in 2024. The company made a big deal about this transition. Titanium is stronger and lighter than stainless steel, which previous Pro models used, but it’s also more expensive.

Apple plans to make “significant design changes” with the iPhone 17 Pro series next year, according to The Information. The company apparently will return to using an aluminum frame, ditching the titanium edges, which could make the 2025 iPhones lighter.

New design for the rear camera housing?

The phones’ rear camera design also might undergo notable changes. Based on the report, the rear of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will use a “part-aluminum, part-glass design.” The bottom half will use the glass panel to retain support for wireless charging.

The camera bump seemingly will switch to aluminum, abandoning the current 3D glass. It should also get a size bump to accommodate bigger camera sensors.

If the report proves accurate, Apple could make some big design changes to the iPhone 17 lineup next year. These changes should not affect the rumored iPhone 17 Air, as it likely will introduce a different design language due to its super-slim frame.
