Google’s Gemini AI could soon be built into the iPhone – Phandroid

Google’s Gemini AI might soon be living on your iPhone.

Galaxy S25 Ultra deal

During testimony for an ongoing antitrust case brought by the US Department of Justice, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed what’s been whispered for months: Google is actively negotiating a deal with Apple to bring Gemini to iOS. Not as a web app, but as a built-in option.

According to Bloomberg, Pichai told the court he’s been talking with Apple CEO Tim Cook throughout 2024, and he hopes to finalize an agreement by mid-2025. If the deal goes through, Gemini would be baked into iPhones sometime this year.

That would be a big shift, especially since Apple already has a partnership with OpenAI. Right now, ChatGPT helps power parts of Siri and other iOS features. But Gemini’s potential inclusion would give users an alternative AI model to work with—possibly even one that integrates more tightly with Google’s existing ecosystem.

This wouldn’t be the first time Apple and Google teamed up despite being rivals. Google still pays Apple billions each year to remain the default search engine on Safari. Gemini could be the next chapter in that uneasy alliance.

We’ve known since March 2024 that Apple was in talks with Google over using Gemini. Apple executives even hinted in a June interview that they were open to the idea. But until now, there hasn’t been a clear timeline—or a high-profile confirmation.

If Pichai’s prediction holds up, iPhone users could soon have a choice between ChatGPT and Gemini. And in the age of AI-powered everything, that’s a pretty big deal.
