Concept: Apple/Cult of Mac
Apple reportedly picked the companies to supply the display for a screen-equipped HomePod scheduled to reach the market later in 2025.
Previous reports say the device will put more emphasis on functioning as a hub for a smart home than current HomePod models do.
Apple leveling up HomePod with larger screen
A smart home can be very convenient. Lights turn themselves on and off without needing to be told every time, heating and AC automatically turn down when no one’s home, and everything responds to voice commands.
Using Apple’s HomeKit, any of these functions can be controlled from an iPhone or Mac, but a hub is required. Basically, this is a computer that never leaves the home and tells the accessories what to do.
Any of the current HomePod models can function as a HomeKit hub, but Apple is reportedly working on one that specializes in the job. To do that, it’ll be the first with a traditional screen.
“Apple is reportedly set to launch a screen-equipped HomePod in 2025,” reported Digitimes on Friday. This will allegedly be a standard LCD supplied by the Chinese company Tianma Microelectronics.
Of course, the company’s current smart speakers already include screens, but these provide only the most basic functionality. The display in the upcoming model will apparently be much larger so it can be used to connect to and control smart accessories.
In December, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities, said, “The display-equipped HomePod is expected to feature an A18 processor, a 6–7 inch display, and support for the Apple Intelligence.”
Kuo says the smart home device should launch in the July-to-September timeframe. It might be announced at WWDC25 in June.
Not the only new HomeKit hub on the way
Leaks describing this device call it “a screen-equipped HomePod,” which indicates it will also include good-quality speakers for playing music.
That seems to set it apart from another rumored Apple product: a HomeKit hub that resembles a small iPad and is intended to hang on a wall. It’s expected sometime in 2025.
