iPhone Pro users replacing their phones at record speed; Report

Pro iPhone users are transitioning to newer models at a significantly quicker rate compared to those with standard versions, as detailed in a recent Counterpoint report. On average, owners of Pro models replace their iPhones every 2.75 years, whereas non-Pro users retain their devices for approximately 3.15 years.

Although this difference may appear minor initially, it represents a substantial shift in the premium smartphone market, particularly as Apple emphasizes higher-priced offerings. This trend is largely attributed to a change in mindset among iPhone users.

A considerable portion of Pro model owners view themselves as innovators or early adopters, with 45 percent claiming to be the first to adopt new technologies. Additionally, 25 percent consider themselves as opinion leaders who sway purchasing decisions.

This self-identification fosters a sense of urgency to upgrade, typically within two to three years following a phone’s release. Concurrently, users of base models are increasingly attracted to the Pro series, enticed by exclusive features such as advanced camera systems, ProMotion displays, and high-quality materials. The shorter upgrade cycles are also impacting the secondary market.

As more Pro models become available for resale, the supply of refurbished units is anticipated to increase, particularly in regions like India and Southeast Asia, where the demand for pre-owned iPhones is robust. Previous supply constraints have hindered many buyers from acquiring refurbished Pro models, but this emerging trend may alleviate some of those difficulties.

The timing of this development is particularly noteworthy with the anticipated launch of the iPhone SE 4 later tonight.

Historically, Apple’s most budget-friendly iPhone has appealed to cost-sensitive consumers, but the forthcoming model is rumored to feature a significant design update, likely mirroring the iPhone 14 with Face ID and an OLED display. If Apple maintains competitive pricing, the SE 4 could serve as an ideal entry point for first-time iPhone purchasers and those transitioning from Android.

The report further emphasizes Apple’s increasing effectiveness in attracting users from the Android ecosystem.
