Apple’s update to the iPhone SE may not be expected until 2024, but that’s not held back the leaks around Apple’s budget-focused iPhone from leaking

iPhone SE 4 Concept Render

4RMD

Thanks to digital artist 4RMD, we have a new way to visualize the upcoming iPhone SE with a CGI rendering of the handset’s leaked details, all wrapped up in an Apple-styled commercial.

Clearly on show is the new design. The fourth edition of the iPhone SE is expected to move from the look started by the iPhone 6 in 2014 to a design reminiscent of the iPhone XR. That means a notched design and a single-lens main camera at the rear.

One decision that 4RMD has made without any guidance from the information available is over the screen; the choice has been made to render this iPhone SE model with a 6.1 inch Liquid Retina screen. According to recent reports, Apple has still to decide on which screen – and therefore the physical size – the iPhone SE will sport:

“Analyst Ross Young has highlighted the curious choice facing Tim Cook and his team… whether to go with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, a 6.1-inch LCD screen or a smaller 5.7-inch LCD… Apple has to play carefully here. The iPhone SE has to create its own successful space while not cannibalizing the main line of iPhones. If there’s not enough separation, then you have something like the iPhone 12 Mini and 13 Mini… nice to see, technically competent, but everyone spent a little more to get the vanilla iPhone.”

These renders show the potential design on the outside of the iPhone, but don’t show what could be powering the machine. Given the lag between the flagship iPhones and the iPhone SE, the presumed launch in 2024 could allow for the latest features announced in September 2022 for the iPhone 14 to feature in this SE.

The SE market is more about value for money and capability than out-and-out power and winning specifications Top Trumps. It’s worth considering the impact on the iPhone ecosystem if the ‘smaller and less expensive’ smartphone sports an eSIM, fast charging, and the A16 Bionic chipset. This is a competitive space where single features can radically change the price and perception of any phone. Apple will be looking to dominate the discussion, but that will need an iPhone SE with no compromise.
