Apple frequently asserts that its base iPhone models offer camera performance nearly equivalent to its Pro counterparts even if it lacks a handful of Pro features. However, DXOMARK rankings tell a different story. The Standard iPhone 16 ranked 20th in DXOMARK’s global camera ranking for smartphones. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro secured the 4th and 5th positions, respectively.

The iPhone 16 falls far behind the iPhone 16 Pro Max

Known for its rigorous testing standards, DXOMARK subjects cameras to exhaustive lab and real-world evaluations. Their meticulous testing ensures no camera performance aspect is overlooked, providing users with reliable and trustworthy scores for smartphone cameras.

DXOMARK subjected Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max to identical testing protocols. In the overall camera score, the Standard iPhone 16 achieved a DXOMARK score of 147 points, placing it in the 20th position. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max secured a score of 157 points, claiming the 5th and 4th spot.

DXOMARK added that the iPhone 16 delivers impressive still and video quality with accurate exposure and pleasing colors. While the hardware remains largely unchanged from its predecessor the iPhone 15, software improvements have enhanced performance. However, the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens limits its long-range zoom capabilities.

They also found that Apple’s iPhone 16 has a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses. It boasts a nice brightness and contrast ratio in both photos and videos, especially when viewed on HDR displays, and delivers accurate colors and skin tones. In some scenarios the iPhone 16 struggles with dynamic range, often leading to highlight clipping.

The phone’s autofocus is fast and accurate, and zooming is smooth with the new Camera Control Button, but the long-range telephoto capabilities are limited, unlike the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Image quality is generally high in bright light and indoor conditions, but low-light performance suffers from noise and detail loss. Video stabilization is effective, but artifacts like flare and moving textures can be noticeable in low-light situations.

The iPhone 16 is still great for video

While the base iPhone lags in overall camera performance, it shows remarkable video capabilities, lagging behind the latest Pro Max model by a mere five points. The iPhone 16 bagged an impressive score of 154 points in video tests, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max topped the video tests leaderboard with a score of 159 points.
