The full-screen no-notch iPhone might not happen for another five years

To notch or not to notch? That seems to be the question for the next few iPhone releases. But according to a new report, we might be waiting a while for a notchless iPhone, as Apple’s plans for an under-display front-facing camera and Face ID won’t happen until 2030.

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young, Apple will move gradually towards a notchless display. Next year, the Dynamic Island will reportedly shrink a little as Apple reconfigures how Face ID is implemented. Then, he says, in 2028, the Face ID sensors will be completely under the display panel, with a hole for the selfie camera (probably centered like many Android phones), before finally, in 2030, we get the first iPhone without any holes or notches as the selfie camera moves underneath the display.

If Young’s timeline holds up, that means that the 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027 won’t feature a notchless display. That runs counter to a report two weeks ago by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said that the 20th anniversary iPhone is called “Glasswing” inside Apple, and that, “There will be extraordinarily slim bezels and no cutout section in the screen.” However, in his Power On newsletter this week, Gurman reported that Apple next year “will shrink the Dynamic Island, moving closer to a screen that truly covers the entire front of the phone.”

Reports have stated that Apple has big plans for a folding phone in 2026 and a commemorative 20th anniversary iPhone a year later with hardware that embraces the Liquid Glass UI language with curved glass edges. For this year’s release, Apple is rumored to be releasing a super-thin model that’s been dubbed the iPhone 17 Air.
