AMD Naming Convention for Mobile Processors for 2023+

AMD has announced new naming scheme for their mobile processors lineup which will be used from 2023 forward. AMD has witnessed almost fifty percent growth of their Ryzen-powered laptops in the last two years (2020-2021). Thus, this has promted reinvestment into the lineup and have plans to increase their categories.

AMD says that it was clear the their current naming scheme for Ryzen Mobile Processors could not accomodate the new categories they were introducing. Thus, there was need for a new system, that was:

  • Simple for the average user to understand.

  • Technical and Informative, such that an enthusiast could understand more.

The New Naming Scheme

We can use the mobile processor AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX. The different segments are:

Portofolio Model Year (7)

This gives sense of what model year the processor lives in.

The Year and their Portofolio year will be as follows:

  • 7 → 2023

  • 8 → 2024

  • 9 → 2025

It is assumed to follow this order through i.e 10 → 2026

Market Segment (6)

Shows the performance at a glance.

Here are the various segments:

  • 1 → Athlon Silver

  • 2 → Athlon Gold

  • 3 → Ryzen 3

  • 4 → Ryzen 3

  • 5 → Ryzen 5

  • 6 → Ryzen 5

  • 7 → Ryzen 7

  • 8 → Ryzen 7/9

  • 9 → Ryzen 9

Architecture (4)

This refers to AMD chip design architectures, commony refered to as Zen

Here is a rundown of the Archictectures so far:

  • 1 → Zen 1 or Zen +

  • 2 → Zen 2

  • 3 → Zen 3 or Zen 3+

  • 4 → Zen 4

  • 5 → Zen 5

Feature Isolation (0)

A concession to archictecture like Zen 3 and Zen 3+, which are represented by same archictecture digit alone. Flipping digit between 0 and 5 ensures that two different archictures don’t end up in the same Ryzen 70xx family.

  • 0 → Lower model within segment

  • 5 → Upper model within segment

Form Factor/TDP (U)

Form factor is an indicator of the processors capabilities and features i.e TDP. AMD uses the TDP to determine the form factor of the processor. Here are the form factors:

  • HX → 55W+ (Max Performance)
  • HS → ~35W+ (Thin Gaming/Creator)
  • U → 15-28W (Premium Ultrathin)
  • C → 15-28W (Chromebook)
  • e → 9W (Fanless variant of “U”)
