AMD might be moving on 3D V-Cache versions of its Ryzen 9000 CPUs faster than expected. According to a leaker on the Chiphell forums, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which could be among the best processors when it releases, might arrive as soon as next month.
VideoCardz dug up the news, which started on the Chiphell forums. The leaker goes by the name zhangzhonhao, but VideoCardz notes that they went under a different alias previously, and that they have a long history of leaking company road maps. The forum post claims AMD will release the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at the end of October, while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D will arrive later. The leaker suspects they’ll show up in early 2025 with “some new features.”
That’s not out of the question. AMD is on the record as saying that it’s working on “really cool differentiators” for its Ryzen 9000 CPUs using 3D V-Cache tech. It’s hard to say what those new features are, but the claim on Chiphell at least lines up with what AMD has said previously. In addition, AMD’s next-gen X870 chipset is arriving on September 30, which would lay the foundation for new 3D V-Cache chips.
AMD is set to hold an event on October 10 called Advancing AI. The company says the event will mainly focus on AMD’s Instinct AI accelerators and the launch of 5th-gen Epyc server CPUs. However, in its announcement, AMD says the event will also feature “networking and AI PC updates.” It seems unlikely that the gaming-focused 3D V-Cache chips will show up at the event, but if this rumor is correct, they could make an appearance.
Most people expected to see AMD release its Ryzen 9000 3D V-Cache chips at the beginning of next year, following a similar pattern that we saw with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. However, midrange Ryzen 9000 CPUs like the Ryzen 7 9700X have struggled in gaming, with most reviews (including our own) pointing back to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D as the best option for gamers.
It’s possible that AMD wants to get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D out as quickly as possible to maintain gaming dominance, especially considering we expect to see Intel’s next-gen Arrow Lake CPUs before the end of the October. This is just a rumor for now, and you should treat it as such. If AMD is going to release the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at the end of October, however, it’ll almost certainly show up at the October 10 event.

AMD might make a last-minute change to save a Ryzen 9000 CPU
AMD has already said that its upcoming Ryzen 9000 CPUs based on the Zen 5 architecture are the fastest consumer PC processors, but a new report suggests Team Red could juice the CPUs even more. A report from Wccftech claims that AMD is considering changing the TDP rating of the Ryzen 7 9700X from 65 watts — which is the power draw the chip was announced with — to 120W.
It’s not just more power for the sake of it. According to the report, AMD is considering this change due to how the Ryzen 7 9700X stacks up against the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is easily the best gaming CPU you can buy, and that’s mainly due to its use of AMD’s 3D V-Cache tech. Without 3D V-Cache, AMD is reportedly worried the Ryzen 7 9700X will fall short.
AMD’s new Ryzen 9000 is slower than its fastest previous-gen chips
AMD recently unveiled its new Ryzen 9000 series of desktop processors based on the new Zen 5 architecture. While these new CPUs bring numerous improvements and advancements, they are not expected to surpass the gaming performance of the previous generation’s Ryzen 7000X3D models, which feature 3D V-Cache technology. While this might come as a surprise to some, it underscores the unique advantages of AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology in gaming scenarios.
The Ryzen 9000 series promises a host of upgrades over the Zen 4 architecture used in the Ryzen 7000 series. These enhancements include better energy efficiency, higher core counts, and architectural refinements aimed at boosting overall performance. The Zen 5 chips are expected to deliver significant gains in multi-threaded workloads and general computing tasks, making them a compelling option for a wide range of users.
AMD on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D: ‘We have a lot to say’
AMD just revealed its Ryzen 9000 chips at Computex 2024, but the company is already working on its versions of these processors with 3D V-Cache. These X3D variants, as they’re called, have been a mainstay of AMD’s lineup since the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and they consistently rank among the best gaming processors. AMD’s Donny Woligroski says the company is “not just resting on laurels,” and that it has some big plans for the next version of X3D chips.
The news comes from PC Gamer, which shared various quotes from an interview with Woligroski. Although we’ve known for a while that 3D V-Cache would come to Ryzen 9000 eventually, Woligroski says that AMD is pushing the tech forward. “It’s not like, ‘hey, we’ve also added X3D to a chip.’ We are working actively on really cool differentiators to make it even better. We’re working on X3D, we’re improving it,” Woligroski told PC Gamer.
