Google pushed Android 15 to AOSP back on September 3, but the update is not scheduled for Pixel devices until October. We are now able to share exactly when that update will be available – that’s October 15.
Typically, Google does push out updates on a Monday, however, October 14 is technically a holiday – Columbus Day – in the US. So it makes sense to move it to the next day. Obviously, things could change, if Google finds additional bugs that need to be squashed ahead of the October 15 date. However, that is the current date for Android 15 to begin its rollout to Pixel devices.
Android 15 will be available for the Pixel 6 and later. Making this the first Android update that is available for Tensor-only Pixel devices. This will also be the final Android update (that is guaranteed) for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Though they will continue to get security updates until 2026.
Why is Android 15 rolling out two months later?
It’s fairly unusual to see Google rolling out the Android 15 update to Pixel devices so far after the push to AOSP. But that’s the case this year. It’s important to remember that Google has many different deadlines. This is for AOSP and its partners, as well as for its own devices. What really threw a wrench into everything this year was Google announcing all of the new Pixel devices in August versus October. When Google announced new Pixels and even Nexus devices,
The thought is, with the extra time Google is spending on this update, it should launch with far fewer bugs compared to previous launches. Some Android launches with new Pixels were really rocky, one that immediately comes to mind is the Pixel 6 launch back in 2020. That phone launched with over 150 bugs that took Google until January 2021 to actually roll out fixes for.
October 15, we should all have a fresh build of Android available for our Pixel devices.
