If you’re a Samsung fan, and especially if you have been using its Galaxy Z Fold smartphones, you may be aware that Samsung has been using the same 4,400 mAh battery in every Fold since the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung has refused to upgrade the battery capacity for five consecutive Galaxy Z Fold models, or four if you don’t count the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which wasn’t released in most countries.

Samsung has done a great job of optimizing its software to extract the maximum possible endurance from that 4,400 mAh battery. And sure, every new Snapdragon chip is more efficient than the last despite having more power. But let’s be real: software optimization and chip efficiency can only do so much to overcome the limitations of a small battery capacity, especially on a phone with two big displays.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 is sixth Galaxy Z Fold with the same battery capacity

In case you missed it, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have slightly larger cover and foldable displays, similar to the displays on the Galaxy Z Fold SE. But the battery capacity isn’t getting an upgrade. While the display resolution and refresh rate are the bigger factors affecting how much power is used, we can’t ignore the fact that the extra screen real estate is also a factor, even if a minor one.

What makes matters worse is that the Galaxy Z Flip 7, a much smaller phone, will have a 4,300 mAh battery. How does it make sense that the foldable that’s supposed to be Samsung’s most premium offering and is meant to be a productivity powerhouse has only a 3% larger battery than the foldable that’s merely designed to put a regular phone into a compact body?

And don’t forget Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra smartphones. Each of those has featured a 5,000 mAh battery, and recent models offer up to two days of battery life on a single charge. They charge faster, too. Fold users, meanwhile, are left with smaller batteries and slower charging speeds despite paying more, and they have been in that predicament for the last four years.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is yet another example of how Samsung isn’t willing to offer any meaningful upgrades with the Fold line. Yes, specs aren’t everything, but after years of minor improvements, maybe it’s time for consumers to draw the line instead of allowing Samsung to take them for granted for the sixth time in a row.
