If there was one thing that I didn’t really like about the Google Pixel 9 launch event, it was how little attention Google paid to the hardware upgrades it made in the new phones. Instead, the company spent essentially the entire keynote talking about software and AI. But I guess that’s the Google way these days.

With the Pixel 10, it looks like Google might be forced to focus on some aspects of its hardware, as it seems that the new phones are going to see a very substantial upgrade to the camera experience. According to a rumor, the stabilization in the Pixel 10 cameras is going to be insanely good—gimbal-level good, in fact.

The Entire Pixel 10 Series Could See Gimbal-Grade Stabilization Upgrades

The Google Pixel smartphones, since the very first year that they were introduced, have always had exceptional cameras. In the early years, they outstripped the competition by quite a lot. In recent years, they’ve remained amazing, though there can be a lot of debate as to whether they still maintain the crown (I don’t think that they do). The summary is that with or without upgrades on paper, Pixel cameras are amazing.

The Pixel 10 series is expected to arrive on August 20th, which is two months and some change away. While we know that the design will remain the same and the hardware likely won’t see drastic changes on paper, there’s going to be something spectacular slated for the camera domain. According to Android Headlines, Google is planning to vastly improve the stabilization of its cameras across the entire Pixel 10 lineup:

  • Pixel 10
  • Pixel 10 Pro
  • Pixel 10 Pro XL
  • Pixel 10 Pro Fold

The reason this is noteworthy is that the level of stabilization is being compared to the stabilization you get if you were to use a smartphone on a DJI Osmo Mobile 6, one of the leading smartphone gimbals. To have gimbal-grade tech packed into the tiny footprint of a phone’s camera module would be amazing, and it would not only mean less blurry photos but also incredible video capabilities. That’s the real selling point, if you ask me.

These Won’t Be the First Smartphones With Gimbal OIS

While it isn’t certain whether Google will implement these improvements primarily through hardware or software, the Pixel 10 series certainly won’t be the first smartphones to claim gimbal-level stabilization. There have been few smartphones that come with “gimbal stabilization” or “gimbal OIS”. While the list isn’t long and is comprised almost entirely of devices from LG, Asus, and Vivo, it goes back as far as 2020.

Phones With Gimbal StabilizationRelease Year
Vivo X200 Ultra2025
Asus Zenfone 12 Ultra2025
Asus ROG Phone 92024
Vivo X80 Pro2022
iQOO 10 Pro2022
LG Wing2020

I can’t speak for all of these devices, but historically, Asus smartphones with the company’s gimbal stabilization have always shown very minimal shake in video recordings. Considering that Apple has always towered over Android devices when it comes to video, this might be the step that Google needs to take to go toe-to-toe in that department.

Through Tecno, Gionee, Vivo, Google, and now Samsung, Ayomide has always been an Android enthusiast. His current partner in crime is a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can find him playing Candy Crush or Call of Duty: Mobile, watching movies, and he is a big fan of trivia and quizzes.
