According to a new report, Google’s cost for producing a Pixel 9 Pro is just over $400, which might be lower than the previous generation.
There are a ton of costs associated with building and putting out a smartphone, well beyond the cost of the materials themselves. However, the “bill of materials” (BOM) is still key to each device, and the Pixel 9 Pro has a BOM cost that seems to be dropping.
New data from Nikkei reveals that the Pixel 9 Pro may cost Google around $406 to make, purely looking at the cost of materials. That cost is broken down, as shared by @Jukanlosreve, to include $80 for the Tensor G4 chipset, $75 for the Samsung-made M14 display panel, and $61 for the cost of camera components. The cost of the chip is up slightly, apparently, while Google managed to save on the display and cameras compared to prior generations.
Google’s cost for the Pixel 9 Pro is said to be about 11% lower than that of the Pixel 8 Pro, though that may not be a direct comparison seeing as the Pixel 9 Pro has a smaller display and battery compared to the Pixel 8 Pro. As far as we can tell, the report isn’t comparing the 9 Pro XL to the 8 Pro, which would provide a more direct comparison.
The same report says that Apple’s cost for iPhone 16 Pro is $568, up slightly from the 15 Pro, with the M14 display costing $110 and camera components costing $91. The chip, Apple’s A18 Pro, is said to cost $135, though that cost seems a bit high. For context, Qualcomm reportedly charges shy of $200 for Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Of course, that $400~ isn’t Google’s full cost for this device, as there are countless other costs associated with shipping, marketing, and more that need to fit within the $999 retail pricing of the device. That price also has to account for discounts and sales.
