Samsung is betting fewer people will buy the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as foldable bet falters

Reports are starting to float around that indicate Samsung has set a shorter manufacturing quota than initially expected, lowering the number of Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 devices being made.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 are undoubtedly coming at an awkward time. The number of foldable devices sold by Samsung has been dropping for some time, and looming tariffs marked with unstable economics in the US have manufacturers playing things a little safer.

According to new reports, Sasmung has shared plans to produce 1.18 million units this month in preparation for the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 (via TheElec). The number looks to be broken down into several parts between the expected two foldables and the new Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE.

Samsung is planning to manufacture 550,000 Galaxy Z Flip 7 units and 630,000 Galaxy Z Fold 7 units. The report appears to indicate that the number of Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE units will end up being around 160,000, though the translation from Korean may be unclear in that regard. The total number of planned devices remains the same.

Samsung has shifted these estimates from a month ago, when the company planned to produce 1.34 million devices, including the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.

These numbers don’t reflect the entirety of what the company wants to push out the door. Still, it’s a start indicating that Samsung doesn’t expect the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 to fly off the shelf in record numbers. Last year, Samsung expected 9-10 million devices to be sold, and in reality, that number ended up being a few million short.

This also comes as Google is finding a stronger foothold in Europe, whereas Samsung seems to have dropped by 15%. The company’s market share dropped to 41% while still maintaining a large majority, though the entire foldable market shrank as a whole.
