Samsung was the first brand in the world to launch a foldable smartphone for the mass market. It was the Galaxy Fold 5G. As the South Korean tech giant was the only one offering such a phone, the company led the foldable smartphone market worldwide.
However, soon after that, other brands, mainly Chinese, too came up with foldable devices. Although these companies haven’t been as successful as Samsung yet, they have been gaining traction in the space. As such, Samsung’s share in the worldwide foldable smartphone market has been consistently falling in the recent years.
In Q2 2024, even though the South Korean tech giant led the market, it had a share of only 16.4%. Motorola was trailing close behind with a share of 15.6%. The two were so close that there was a possibility of Samsung losing the lead position. Well, to everyone’s surprise, the South Korean tech giant has bounced back strongly.
Samsung’s share in worldwide foldable phone market jumps from 16.4% to 51.2%
According to a new report from International Data Corporation (IDC), in Q3 2024, Samsung led the foldable smartphone market with a share of 51.2%. That’s a massive jump from the previous number of 16.4%. Motorola’s market share, on the other hand, has dropped down to 15.1%. Despite that, it is holding the second position.
Samsung is now way ahead of the competition, and there’s no doubt that the reason behind the success is the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6. These phones offer things that people have been asking for, including a more compact design, lighter weight, enhanced durability, better displays, better cameras, and more powerful processors.
The story continues after the video…
If Samsung keeps listening to and meeting customers’ demands, there’s no beating the company in the foldable smartphone market. Well, at least till Apple comes up with a foldable iPhone, which is not expected to come out in before 2027.
