According to a new report, Samsung seemingly doesn’t have huge expectations for its Android XR headset, with only “around” 100,000 units planned to ship this year.
“Project Moohan” will be the first Android XR headset when it debuts later this year, but Samsung doesn’t seem to have high hopes for it to be a runaway success. A report from The Elec (via @Jukanlosreve) claims that Samsung has plans for “around 100,000 units” to be shipped “this year.” It’s not entirely clear if that refers exclusively to the 2025 calendar year – “Moohan” is expected to go on sale in October – or the first year of availability, though.
That’s a pretty low figure, even in the VR/XR world. Meta Quest 3 was estimated to have sold roughly 1 million units by June 2024, several months after its October 2023 launch. Apple reportedly stopped production of Vision Pro in late 2024 with “enough components for 600,000 headsets” available. In January 2024, the same month Apple opened orders of Vision Pro, it was said that the company had sold around 200,000 units.
So, clearly, Samsung isn’t “betting the farm” on this one, but this figure does seem low even with that in mind.
The report explains that Samsung is also leveraging displays from Sony for the OLEDos panels needed for “Project Moohan.” Sony also provides the panels for Vision Pro, though Samsung’s headset will also use displays from Samsung Display. The partnership with Sony is said to primarily be about looking forward for a “stable” supply chain “if” the market grows for this product.
Samsung’s displays inside of “Project Moohan” are said to be even better than those found in Apple Vision Pro.
As mentioned, this product is expected to hit the market towards the end of this year, but may be teased at Samsung’s next Unpacked event on July 9.
Samsung has reservations open now for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, with a $50 credit when you pre-order and up to $1,150+ in savings. Reservations are free, and there’s no obligation to actually buy a device if you sign up, but there’s no other time you can get that $50 credit (which can go towards Galaxy Watch 8), 3x reward points, and other perks.
