Samsung was the second-biggest smartphone brand in the US in Q2 2023, according to a new market research analysis by Canalys. However, the South Korean firm sold less than as many smartphones as Apple did in the same period. Other Android smartphone brands, including Google, did far worse.

Samsung was the second-biggest smartphone brand in the US in Q2 2023

According to the report, Samsung shipped 6.6 million smartphones in the US during the second quarter of 2023, capturing a 24% share of the overall market. However, that’s 3 percentage points less than a year earlier when it shipped 9 million smartphones, and that drop is likely due to the current global economic situation with high inflation and job cuts. However, Samsung sold 23% more premium smartphones compared to last year, which is a positive sign. In comparison, Apple shipped 14.8 million smartphones in Q2 2023, capturing a whopping 54% share of the US market. However, even Apple’s shipments dropped by 3.7 million compared to Q2 2022 numbers.

Except for Google, all other smartphone brands saw a massive decline in shipments in the US. Google’s shipments jumped 59% in Q2 2023 compared to Q2 2022. However, when you look at its numbers, it doesn’t look all that impressive. Google shipped 1.2 million Pixel phones, capturing a 4% market share, two percentage points higher than last year’s second quarter.

Motorola was the third biggest smartphone brand in the US, with 2.3 million shipments and a market share of 8%. Its shipments dropped by 25% compared to Q2 2022, when it shipped 3.1 million phones. TCL shipped 1.3 million smartphones in the country and captured a 1.3% share of the market during the same quarter. Its shipments dropped by 30%, most among the top five brands.

Samsung sold more phones than all other Android brands combined in the US

One good thing for Samsung after looking at this report is that it shipped more smartphones than all other Android brands combined in the US. So, it shows what people look at when buying an Android smartphone and how strong Samsung’s brand presence and reputation are. Recently, Samsung caught up with Apple in the customer satisfaction ratings in the US in the personal computing segment.
