Samsung has been using OLED screens in its high-end laptops for four years and plans to expand them further in the laptop market. Samsung Display is now working with industry giants Intel and Qualcomm to improve the use of OLED panels in laptops in the near future.
Samsung Display to push OLED panel use in laptops
Samsung Display, the world’s biggest small and medium-sized OLED panel maker, is working with chipmakers Intel and Qualcomm to improve the adoption of OLED panels in laptops. During the Korea Display Exhibition, Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-sun said technology, production scale, and customer collaboration are important in strengthening competitiveness in the laptop market.
The South Korean firm recently started supplying Tandem OLED panels for Apple’s new iPad Pro. It will reportedly supply OLED panels for future iPad Air and iPad Mini models, and some reports claim it will soon supply OLED panels for Apple’s future MacBooks.
To meet the rising demand for OLED panels in the laptop market, Samsung Display will KRW 4.1 trillion (around $3 billion) to build a new 8.6-generation OLED production line by 2026. This line is reportedly capable of making over 10 million OLED panels per year.
While LG Display has already showcased its Tandem OLED panel for laptops, Samsung Display hasn’t, and it seems the company is lagging behind. However, being the world’s biggest OLED panel maker, we think Samsung will soon work on it and be ready with Tandem OLED panels for laptops and monitors.
Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-sun, said, “We will continue to build on the differentiation of our mobile OLEDs by expanding into IT OLEDs through collaboration with various system partners, such as Intel and Qualcomm. We are in talks with many customers, and our OLED panels will create synergy with on-device AI.”
