According to a new report, Huawei’s first tri-fold smartphone will support “PC level’ apps. Based on this report from China, the phone also passed the 28μm test. That is a test that evaluates the durability and visibility of the display screen after repeated folding.

In other words, the phone’s crease situation should also be good. That is not surprising as Huawei does have a good grasp on it, judging by the company’s most recent foldable offerings.

This smartphone is expected to ship with Huawei’s new HarmonyOS NEXT OS, which is not based on Android. A new Kirin SoC is also expected, and the phone is said to be able to run “PC-level” apps.

Based on the information that we have thus far, however, this thing will be expensive. Huawei will also likely produce it in limited quantities. Don’t expect this device to be readily available outside of China.

This phone will likely remain exclusive to China

If we had to guess, we’d say that the first-gen model will stay exclusive to China. Huawei most likely wants to flex its muscles a bit with this device, rather than make it globally available. Mass production is allegedly scheduled for Q4 this year, by the way.

Now, back in November last year, a report claimed that the company’s tri-fold device will launch in Q1 2024. That obviously didn’t happen. It was followed by a report claiming Huawei has some issues with the development of the device, but those issues have allegedly been sorted.

The latest report regarding this handset surfaced last month. It claimed that Huawei will be the very first company to announce a tri-fold smartphone. Samsung is allegedly also developing one but does not have plans to launch it anytime soon. Back then, Ice Universe said that Samsung “is still struggling to study how to make ordinary folding machines thinner”.
