In the clamshell foldable world, Chinese manufacturers are starting to warm up, but Samsung and Motorola still stand as the supreme options. Motorola, in particular, brought back the Razr brand name, which was one of the smartest decisions they could have made, and this year saw the release of the Razr 50 series.
While we thought the Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra would be the only two clamshell foldables from Motorola in 2024, it seems there’s going to be a third entrant. This isn’t official from Motorola but comes from a product page (which is still live and yet to be taken down) on Japanese carrier Softbank.
The Motorola Razr 50s Hasn’t Been Announced Officially, But Its Listing Doesn’t Seem To Be A Fluke
I knew absolutely nothing of the existence of a fourth Motorola Razr foldable for 2024. I heard not even a whisper, at least until now. Via Android Headlines, it was found that Softbank, a Japanese mobile carrier, had a listing page live for the Motorola Razr 50s. In fact, that page is still live right now and you can check it out here. However, there hasn’t even been a peep from Motorola themselves regarding this phone.
The fact that Softbank has left the listing up makes it clear that this isn’t some kind of mistake and that the device truly exists. It is odd, regardless, because Motorola hasn’t even teased it.
With the “s” designation, the device is meant to be the very bottom of the Razr food chain, coming with the lowest-grade specs with the trade-off of also having the lowest price, making it more accessible. It just remains to be seen whether this device will be Japan-exclusive or if consumers will be able to get their hands on it globally.
It is normal to expect the Motorola Razr 50s to cut corners in certain places when compared to the regular Motorola Razr 50. However, from the spec sheet on Softbank’s website, I wasn’t able to notice a single spec to differentiate the two devices, which is rather unusual. The Razr 50 is already available in Japan too, so why would Motorola have two essentially identical devices on sale?
Well, it seems the real answer will come when the device is made official on September 27th. However, for now, let me just do a quick recap of the specs that you can expect from the clamshell. It’ll have an FHD+ 3.6-inch cover display and an FHD+ 6.9-inch folding display while sharing the same design as the Razr 50. It’ll also come with a Dimensity 7300X chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.
In the battery department, we know the same 4,200 mAh cell will be present. The camera setup will also stay as 50MP + 13MP units embedded in the cover display and a 32MP selfie cam on the inside. Even the dimensions and colorways are the same, but it being released as a separate model. I’m excited to see the code cracked in a few days.
