Motorola Shows Off Shape-Shifting Phone That Fits on Your Wrist

Lenovo is back with a concept smartphone that can curl around your wrist. 

The company’s Motorola Mobility division is showing off the prototype at today’s Lenovo Tech World event. The smartphone features a flexible display that can do more than just fold. It also bends at several points across the screen, allowing it to wrap and curl.

Lenovo has dubbed the concept an “adaptive display” smartphone, which can be shaped into different forms, depending on your needs. In terms of specs, the device features a flexible OLED panel with a screen resolution at full HD plus. 

“The adaptive display concept can be adjusted from a standard Android phone experience in a flat position to being wrapped for a wrist-worn experience or positioned in several stand modes,” the company added. 

Hence, the phone can become like a smartwatch when wrapped around the wrist. The phone’s ability to curl also means it can prop itself up and take pictures as you stand away from the device and pose.

When laid flat, the product operates as a traditional 6.9-inch Android phone. But if you adjust into a “self-standing” position, the phone’s software will automatically adjust itself to act as a 4.6-inch smartphone. 

The concept looks more refined from 2016 when Lenovo initially debuted a similar phone, the CPlus, which could also wrap around your wrist. But at the time, the company said it still needed more time to make the product’s shape-shifting more reliable. The original device also contained larger bezels and a smaller 4.6-inch screen.  

There’s still no word on whether Lenovo will sell the adaptive display phone. We reached out to the company for comment and will update the story if we hear back.
