Nothing Phone 2 chipset accidentally confirmed by Qualcomm exec

Nothing announced during the recently concluded MWC 2023 that it’ll pack a flagship Snapdragon 8 series chip inside the upcoming Nothing Phone 2. The company didn’t specify which 8-series SoC it would be, but it looks like a Qualcomm executive accidentally gave it away in their Linkedin post.

Qualcomm’s SVP and GM of Mobile, Compute, and XR business unit, Alex Katouzian, took to the jobs portal to congratulate Carl Pei and the Nothing team on the launch of Phone 2 with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. The post was quickly edited to remove the mention of the chip. However, eagle-eyed folks at 91Mobiles managed to grab a screenshot of it before it was changed.

While it’s totally in the realm of possibility that the Qualcomm executive made a mistake and that Nothing will use a different Snapdragon 8 Gen chip, it’s highly unlikely. The post looks like a classic case of oversharing.

Nothing is known to be secretive about its products and tease them endlessly before they arrive. Maybe this one surprise has now been ruined for the company.

That said, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 would still make the Nothing Phone 2 a pretty powerful performer. Even though it’s not Qualcomm’s latest and greatest flagship SoC, it’s a major improvement compared to the Phone 1’s Snapdragon 778G Plus chipset. The fact that the Nothing Phone 2 does not feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could also make it more competitively priced compared to other 2023 flagships. All this is speculation, though. Only time will tell if the Nothing Phone 2 lives up to the hype.
