OpenAI has revolutionized AI and highlighted the technology’s potential by vigorously bringing new cutting-edge products and upgrades to existing models. With SearchGPT here to take on Meta and Google, the company has taken an aggressive approach to advancement in its platform capabilities and is not slowing any time soon. While Sam Altman recently opened up about his plans for some big releases by the end of the year, he also gave a disclaimer regarding no GPT-5 coming out in 2024.

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that the next major version of the ChatGPT might not be coming out this year

During a Reddit AMA held this week, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman revealed the company’s plans for this year, and a surprising revelation also emerged. While Altman gave the tech community something exciting to look forward to by suggesting a ton of major releases planned to be rolled out later in the year, he also opened up about the plans to not release the next major release of ChatGPT this year.

He specifically said that he would not be releasing the GPT-5 this year and would instead focus on shipping GPT-o1. The model, previously called ‘Project Strawberry,’ differs from other models by taking a more methodological and slower approach. This would help support tasks in mathematics, science, and other areas that require more accuracy and logical reasoning.

Altman explained the reason behind the decision to step in this direction, and it was the complexity of the models that made it difficult to work on them simultaneously. He said:

All of these models have gotten quite complex and we can’t ship as many things in parallel as we’d like to. We also face a lot of limitations and hard decisions about [where] we allocate…our computers towards.

While OpenAI is working arduously to evolve its technology, Sam Altman shared their vision to make AI capable enough to act as “agents” on users’ behalf and perform tasks autonomously. If the company is able to achieve this, it could mark another giant breakthrough, and it sounds very promising given its capabilities to go beyond merely providing information and instead accomplish tasks with minimal human input.

Sam Altman further shared his intentions to open up the “Not Safe For Work” (NSFW) adult content sometime in the future and let users experience interactions with AI like adults without limitations. However, given the challenges such an implementation could pose, it is still a future consideration.
