TCL has just launched its latest Google TV set in the high-end QM8K series, with the QD-Mini LED TV packing software upgrades as well as huge display updates and a neat new trick with the speakers.
The TCL QM8K series uses the company’s new “CrystGlow WHVA Panel” which boasts 35% more dimming zones for improved black levels and better colors, as well as 65% higher peak brightness in HDR content. This is made possible in part thanks to TCL’s new “Halo Control System” which includes a new chip many other improvements.
TCL explains:
The Halo Control System yields three key benefits including enhanced color accuracy, enhanced gray scale accuracy, as well as virtually no blooming, for more natural, stunning picture quality. The new system’s Super High Energy LED Chip combines high brightness with increased light efficiency while a Super Condensed Micro Lens uses a narrower light path for more precise light control. Additionally, the new TCL Micro OD reduces optical distance between the backlight and diffuser plate, helping avoid light overlap for virtually no blooming or halo effect, to produce clear, sharp edges between bright whites and dark blacks.
But the biggest upgrade you might notice is around the display or, rather, what’s not there.
TCL is implementing its new “ZeroBorder” which effectively means there’s no bezel at all, while the TV as a whole is constructed with an aluminum alloy. TCL says the bezels measure just “3-4mm” which is just incredibly narrow on a device of this size.

Another area of upgrade is in the built-in audio. TCL is using new speakers built with Bang & Olufsen. These should be improved over your average built-in speakers for a TV set, but where they really stand out is in their ability to pair with TCL “FlexConnect” audio setups. This uses the TV’s speaker in conjunction with the TCL Z100 speaker for a “panoramic” and flexible audio setup in their home.

The TCL QM8K series is available now from Best Buy in the US starting at $2,499.99, and you’ll also find some upgrades in the software alongside Google TV. This should also be one of the first TV sets getting the Gemini upgrade.
