Vivo X Fold 5 goes official with dust resistance and Apple Watch support

Vivo has announced its latest foldable, the Vivo X Fold 5, which delivers some impressive hardware and, somehow, Apple Watch integration.

The Vivo X Fold 5 is an upgrade to what was already one of the best foldables on the market, and it has some compelling upgrades both in hardware and software. While it’s powered by last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it has an 8.03-inch inner display, Android 15, and up to 16GB of RAM. Despite its size, it weighs just 217g, doubly impressive due to the 6,000 mAh battery stuffed inside. It also has a trio of 50MP cameras on the back and two 20MP cameras on each display.

And it does all of that while still being thinner than many other foldables, measuring as little a 9.2mm when closed. Plus, this is a somewhat dust resistant foldable. Vivo touts the usual IPX8 and IPX9 water resistance, but also says X Fold 5 has IP5X dust resistance, meaning there is actual protection against dust even if the device isn’t fully dust tight. It’s the highest IP dust rating on a foldable… at least for now.

But the software also stands out here.

Vivo is launching a new “Atomic Workbench” that lets the user run up to 5 Android apps at the same time.

Beyond that, Vivo has put a lot of emphasis on Apple integration. The company says (translated) that “X Fold5 can support the flow of iPhone calls, messages and notifications,” and also claims a form of Apple Watch support. Vivo says (translated):

Android phones are connected to Apple Watch for the first time, and can answer calls, view messages, and even synchronize health data to the vivo health app.

The details here are still fuzzy but, somehow, this foldable can work with an Apple Watch for core features. With the other context of iPhone integration, it seems likely this is a passthrough connection of sorts, but it’s still intriguing.

Vivo X Fold 5 is available for order now in China, but it’s unclear when it will be coming to other markets, if it does at all.
