I didn’t have the highest hopes for the foldable segment of the market when it first started to cement itself as a permanent thing, but these days, I have to eat my words and admit that foldable smartphones have come a long way. My next phone will still be a regular bar phone, but I think after that, foldables might just be ripe enough for me to try.

Vivo is one of the OEMs that offers foldables to the public, and its foldables stand out mostly for their awesome camera setups. The Vivo X Fold 3 came out over a year ago, and its sequel is confirmed and expected to arrive this month. However, we can’t talk about it without talking about some of how it’ll break a few records among foldables.

The Vivo X Fold 5 Will Be the Most Dust-Resistant Foldable Phone Yet

The Vivo X Fold 5 isn’t a rumor. Official Vivo channels have teased the device, and for those who love the company’s foldables, you won’t have to wait long. The device is expected to arrive on the scene at some point later this month.

The Vivo X Fold 5 will deliver in most aspects of the spec sheet, as expected. However, it will bring one or two things that no other foldable can really tote at the moment, and the most notable of those might be the presence of proper dust resistance. The X Fold 5 will have three IP certifications (why they can’t be compressed into one, I’m not sure), and they are:

  • IPX8 certification: immersion in three-meter deep water
  • IPX9 certification: resistance to high temperature and high-pressure water
  • IP5X certification: protection against dust entry

No other folding smartphone goes over an IP4X rating in terms of dust resistance, with the costly Galaxy Z Fold 6 only making do with an IP48 certification, and protecting only against solid particles bigger than 1mm is pretty much useless. The Vivo X Fold 5 will be properly dust-resistant.

The Device Will Also Be the Lightest Book-Style Foldable Phone

Vivo has also claimed that it will break the record for the lightest large and inward-folding smartphone. That doesn’t sound impossible. An image of the X Fold 5 beside an iPhone 16 Pro Max shows a shocking degree of thinness, and with a slimmer device comes a lighter weight.

The Vivo X Fold 5 Might Fail Your Expectations in the Performance Department

With the spec sheet that has been rumored for Vivo’s next foldable, by no measure will it be a bad foldable phone. However, there is one particular aspect of the spec sheet where it may not perform as well as you would like. Unfortunately, this was the case with its predecessor, too.

The Vivo X Fold 5 is rumored to come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (the same chip as the X Fold 3 Pro), rather than the more obvious choice, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Essentially every other major foldable packs the Elite option, and without that, some consumers might put the phone down and go for something else.

Including info from a post this morning showing off the device, here’s a look at the rumored spec sheet for the upcoming phone:
