In July, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun created a poll asking if we wanted to see the MI Flip phone in our location. Personally, the answer was yes. I want to see a premium phone launch that’s not tied to Apple or Samsung, particularly now more than ever from the brand that just beat Apple to the second spot on the leaderboard.
The poll results showed 79% of respondents voting “Yes,” 15% voting “No, ” and 6% were unsure with a “Maybe” response. As the Yes-es have it, the Xiaomi MI Flip phone is officially launching globally this September. The CEO took to his X account again to share the news but didn’t give an exact date. September is almost over anyway, so it’s a matter of days before you finally see the device near you.
Xiaomi MIX Flip is coming to challenge Samsung
The Mix Flip is Xiaomi’s latest entry into the foldable smartphone market and may compete with popular models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series. Although CEO Lei Jun doesn’t mention other information besides the September release, we already have an idea of the specs.
The launched version in China reveals that the phone will have a 4.01-inch outer screen with quick app support and even selfie-taking, among other features. The inner display is 6.8-inches and uses AMOLED technology, 1.5K resolution, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The peak brightness is 3000 nits, although the global model may tone it down to 1600 nits, which is still quite disappointing but manageable. You just don’t want to be under direct sunlight, or you’ll be frustrated.
The phone uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and a Leica-based dual camera setup. Each camera is 50MP, with the front one having 32MP. You can record up to 8K resolution videos with the rear camera and 4K quality with the selfie lens. The battery capacity is 4780mAh with support for 67W. The memory options are quite generous, offering three choices between 12GB RAM + 256GB storage, 12GB RAM + 512GB storage, and 16GB RAM + 1TB storage.
Ready for a new foldable?
Price-wise, the Xiaomi Mix Flip starts at ¥5999 (roughly $851), which is affordable compared to other popular brands. The phone is available in White, Phantom Purple, and Black. You can order it on the official website or from third-party retailers when it officially hits the market.
The phone supports networks in over 180 countries, increasing roaming speeds by 72%. It delivers up to 380% faster downloads with 5G-A technology while improving online performance with Wi-Fi 7. The phone will most likely come with Android 14 overlayed with HyperOS, which feels more polished than previous MIUI versions although it still has a long way to go.
Disclaimer: The information presented in this post is based on the Xiaomi MIX Flip launched in China. Specifications for the global version may vary as Xiaomi reserves the right to make product modifications before the official release.
