Tech giants like Apple, Samsung, Google, and numerous Chinese OEMs are already leading the smartphone industry. However, there’s always a scope for the entry of new companies in this market. It really doesn’t matter if their primary market is different. Now, it could soon be true. Recently, a wild rumor surfaced online claiming that CPU maker AMD could enter the smartphone market.

A new report claims CPU-giant AMD is mulling over plans to enter the smartphone market

Folks over at Insider Monkey (via Yahoo Finance) spotted a report by Smartphone Magazine with these claims. According to the report, industry insiders suggest that AMD is in talks with several smartphone manufacturers for its possible entry into the market.

Team Red is reportedly mulling over ideas to pack its “APU-like” Ryzen AI processors in the smartphone industry. Notably, the alleged SoC could be similar to what you see these days in handheld devices. If this rumor turns out to be true, AMD could become a direct rival to the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek who have already established themselves in the smartphone markets.

Qualcomm, which recently unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC for smartphones, is still a dominant name in the mobile chip industry. What’s more interesting is that it also entered the PC market with the unveiling of the Snapdragon X Elite chipset which has been getting a pretty good reception.

Meanwhile, MediaTek isn’t behind in this race. The company recently unveiled its flagship SoC, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400. Additionally, there are rumors that it is also considering launching an AI PC chip in collaboration with NVIDIA. Therefore, we can’t rule out AMD from jumping into the already loaded boat in the smartphone market.

If Team Red pulls this off, it will significantly impact the existing smartphone market

If AMD pulls the whole smartphone thing, giants like Samsung, Google, and Apple will have an extra competitor. That said, it could take years for AMD to stand neck-to-neck with these big names. Simply put, it can’t achieve the things it could be aiming for overnight.

The news outlet also claims that AMD’s RDNA graphics architecture, which revolutionized PC gaming, could soon make its way to smartphones. When exactly? The report doesn’t mention anything in that regard. If that happens, it could result in impressive graphics performance giving smartphone gamers and content creators top-notch graphic experience on the go.

If we look at the bigger picture, NVIDIA is dominating the AI markets, leaving AMD with barely any room for growth. Therefore, a business expansion of this kind is possible even though we haven’t seen many PC-focused companies doing so. Moreover, if I were AMD, I would still be optimistic and hope for things to turn out well.
