The Radeon RX 9070 XT is out of stock, but sales of the GPU have vastly outperformed AMD’s other graphics card launches, says CEO Lisa Su.

“9070 XT has been a fantastic success. Actually, it’s the number one selling for all of the AMD Radeon generations for first-week sales by far,” Su told Asus General Manager Tony Yu in a YouTube interview. Demand for the Radeon 9070 XT has been so strong that sales are “10x” higher compared with previous generations, she added.

“We’re very excited about it and we’re increasing the manufacturing so that we can have more gamers to have access,” Su said.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT and 9070 launched on March 6 as an alternative to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5000 GPUs, which are pricier and harder to find. PC builders latched on to the 9070 XT in particular because it starts at $599 while offering performance on par with Nvidia’s RTX 5070 Ti, which starts at $749 but sells for as much as $1,300.

The Radeon 9070 XT was a gamble for AMD since the company opted not to spend money developing a high-end GPU in favor of a more mainstream offering.

“For RDNA 4, what we really wanted to do is bring the best gaming capability to a, let’s call it, a ‘good price point,’ So that we could get more gamers to have access to this technology,” Su said in the YouTube video. “Of course, everyone likes a very, very high-end GPU, but not so many people can access it.”

Although AMD says more supplies are on the way, one challenge facing the Radeon GPUs is retailers increasing the prices for the 9070 XT, which can add another $100 or $200 to the final cost. As a result, there’s growing concern that finding the 9070 XT at $599 will become rare.

Lisa has been a great CEO for AMD but I wish she would try to compete at the higher end GPUs.
