When I look back at the early days of my love for smartphones, I realize that one thing that excited me about device releases, even if I had no interest in that brand, was the continuous improvements we saw on the spec sheet, year after year. Screens got bigger, storage got larger, and charging got faster.

While things have simmered down for the most part with regular smartphones, foldables are one aspect of the market where we continue to see advancements. Each release brings a device trying to be thinner, lighter, and still more “flagship” than the last. The Vivo X Fold 5 follows that formula, with some official word on its dimensions and battery.

The Vivo X Fold 5 Will Be Both Thinner and Lighter Than the X Fold 3 Pro

The next foldable on the roster is the Vivo X Fold 5, which is expected to launch on June 25th. After that, the Honor Magic V5 will show up on July 2nd, and then the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sometime later in July. Today is about Vivo’s foldable, though, which the company has claimed is going to be the thinnest and lightest foldable out there.

While we’ve had to do a lot of conjecture to figure out exactly where it might place in terms of its dimensions, one of Vivo’s execs has just given us some pretty major pieces of information relating to the device’s specs when compared to the outgoing flagship foldable, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro.

  • The X Fold 5 will be about 20 grams lighter than the X Fold 3 Pro, which weighed 236 grams.
  • The X Fold 5 will be about 2mm lighter than the X Fold 3 Pro, which measured 11.2mm when folded.
  • Deducing from the information provided by Vivo, the X Fold 5 should weigh around 216 grams and measure about 9.2mm when folded.

I do find it interesting that Vivo compared the upcoming device to last year’s Pro model, considering that the Pro model is notably heavier and thicker than the regular X Fold 3. That was likely because the numbers sound more impressive when put beside the X Fold 3 Pro, though they still beat the X Fold 3’s dimensions. However, 9.2mm when closed doesn’t beat the Oppo Find N5, so I’m curious to see what the official measurements are.

The X Fold 5 Also Crams in a Much Larger Battery Than the Vivo X Fold 3 Series

Considering that the Vivo X Fold 5 will not only be lighter and thinner than the X Fold 3 and its Pro model, it is quite notable that the device seems set to bring a massive battery. That’s 6,000mAh, to be exact, making it the largest battery to ever be featured in a foldable phone. That’s 300mAh bigger than the X Fold 3 Pro and 500mAh bigger than the regular X Fold 3.

Apparently, besides silicon-carbon battery technology, Vivo has done a lot in terms of battery engineering to increase the battery’s energy density and make it as thin and as light as possible. In fact, Vivo wasn’t shy about showing off the battery itself, which is light enough to balance as part of a bridge of cards and seems to be thinner than a coin.

Through Tecno, Gionee, Vivo, Google, and now Samsung, Ayomide has always been an Android enthusiast. His current partner in crime is a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can find him playing Candy Crush or Call of Duty: Mobile, watching movies, and he is a big fan of trivia and quizzes.
