Apple reportedly still in talks to use Gemini for iPhone AI features as OpenAI deal looms

Apple is expected to be using a third party to power some upcoming AI features on the iPhone, with Google Gemini reportedly being a contender. But, apparently, that deal is still not closed, but one with OpenAI is nearly ready.

A new report from Bloomberg reveals that Apple and OpenAI have “closed in on an agreement” to use ChatGPT features on the iPhone as a part of iOS 18. The exact ways in which ChatGPT would be leveraged within iOS is unclear at this point, but the deal isn’t also isn’t locked in yet, Bloomberg says.

Meanwhile, a deal between Apple and Google over AI isn’t off the table, the report says.

It was reported in March that Apple was considering a deal with Google to use Gemini to power AI features in iOS. At the time, it was said that Apple was looking at Gemini for cloud-based text and image generation.

The two companies apparently have yet to reach an agreement, but discussions are still “ongoing.”

Apple is expected to announce iOS 18 and unveil its AI features at WWDC. That event is scheduled for June 10, about a month after Google’s own I/O developer conference which kicks off on May 14. It was reported today that Apple plans to revamp Siri with generative AI.
