Ahead of the Apple Vision Pro’s launch tomorrow, three surprise launch titles have been revealed: Kluge Interactive’s Synth Riders, and new versions of Illustrated and Patterned from BorderLeap
Synth Riders is a VR rhythm game where players dance as they interact with notes flying toward them and dodge obstacles to the beat of popular songs. Kluge Interactive has redesigned Synth Riders for Apple Vision Pro, using its spatial reality features to include a mode that makes it look like the notes are flying right at you in your own room. At release, over 73 songs will be included, with Kluge sharing the whole track list on Spotify. Kluge released a gameplay video to give people a better idea of what to expect from this version of Synth Riders.
Illustrated and Patterned were both previously released for iOS via Apple Arcade. They are essentially digital jigsaw puzzle games. Illustrated has story elements with each picture and was made in partnership with the Van Gough Museum, while Patterned‘s puzzles are based on images full of repeating patterns. Both have been redesigned around the Apple Vision Pro’s SpatialOS so that players can fully immerse themselves in the puzzles they are solving. They will receive even more puzzles post-launch.
To play Synth Riders, Illustrated, or Patterned, you’ll need an Apple Arcade subscription. That also goes for other Apple Vision Pro launch titles, like Resolution Games’ Game Room, What the Golf?, and Super Fruit Ninja. Over 100 regular Apple Arcade games are also playable on the Apple Vision Pro, and you can easily connect a Bluetooth controller to the headset in order to play them.
Apple Vision Pro and its unique versions of Synth Riders, Illustrated, and Patterned launch on February 2.

U.K. launches investigation into Apple’s cloud gaming restrictions
The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is planning to launch an investigation into Apple’s restrictions on cloud gaming. The government agency announced in a press release that it is in the consultation phase of the investigation following a year-long market study into Apple, as well as its rival Google.
The study found that the tech giants had a duopoly over the mobile market that severely restricted competition by third-party developers and deprived them of incentives. In the case of Apple, it’s looking into its restrictions on cloud gaming services on the App Store after hearing complaints from U.K. developers who say that such restrictions make it difficult for them to compete in the market, not to mention deprive users who prefer accessing a wide variety of games through cloud gaming that they cannot find in the App Store.
Even with 32 GPU cores, the M1 Max MacBook Pro still isn’t a gaming destination
Apple announced the new M1 Max chip at its Apple Unleashed event on October 18. The updated system on a chip (SoC) features some big improvements — the most impressive of which is a staggering 32 GPU cores. That’s four times as many as the Apple M1, the notion of which pushed my rotted PC gamer brain to one place: Portable MacBook gaming.
With a much higher core count, the M1 Max MacBook Pro should offer a big boost to gaming performance compared to the M1. That doesn’t mean the MacBook Pro is a gaming laptop, though. It was never designed that way, and a lacking library of Mac titles means that most games won’t be able to take advantage of the extra horsepower.

Fantasian Part 2 comes to Apple Arcade this week alongside more new games
The second part of Fantasian will arrive on Apple Arcade this week on Friday, August 13. Along with Fantasian, Apple announced more games coming to the service soon, such as Zen Pinball Party and Zookeeper World.
Fantasian is a JRPG developed by Mistwalker, a studio filled with some of the biggest names in the industry. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, helmed this project along with veteran music composer Nobuo Uematsu. Fantasian is a turned-based RPG that utilizes hand-crafted dioramas for the scenery of the game. Over 160 dioramas were created to bring this unique style to this game.
