The Sony Xperia 1 VI is the next phone coming out of the pipeline from the very notable Japanese electronics company. We know that the phone is coming out on May 17th, which is just two weeks from now, and while there hasn’t been anything official revealed regarding the specs, we know a lot from the leaks that have been trickling out.

Now, a recent leak from MSPowerUser has given us even more information, a lot of it new and a lot of it confirming what we had already heard before. The Xperia 1 VI looks set to be a solid smartphone on paper, so let’s talk about it.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI Design Will Change Thanks To The Screen Changing

The Sony Xperia 1 series is full of flagship phones, and on paper, they look pretty impressive. In the hand, literally speaking, they might not deliver the way you want, because the phones are unusually tall thanks to adopting a not-often-seen 21:9 aspect ratio. This makes the phones rather slender and they can be somewhat uncomfortable to use in the hand.

For five generations, Sony stuck with this odd aspect ratio, but it seems the sixth time is the charm, as the screen will shrink to a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, which will make it look a lot more like other modern devices. This means the phone won’t be as stumpy and will be easier to hold.

However, besides a change in the dimensions, the phone will retain the minimalist Sony design that I’m a fan of, which means a flat screen, flat back panel, somewhat flat sides, and a vertically oriented camera module. The leak says the back panel will be frosted textured glass though, and the phone will be available in black and platinum silver.

Beyond The Aspect Ratio, The Screen Will Improve

The aspect ratio is getting shorter, which is much needed for these phones. However, the screen will also improve in other ways.

Sure, the Xperia 1 series is made up of flagships, but was a 4K screen really needed for five generations straight? Sony is literally the only smartphone manufacturer to have equipped phones with 4K screens up until date and there’s a reason no one else has tried it: it’s pointless. It’s a waste of battery life and added cost. The 4K screen is rumored to be taking a hike this year, likely to be replaced with a 1440p display.

Dropping to a more sensible aspect ratio and resolution also seems to enable the choice to add a 120Hz unit. It is also said to be getting 1.5x brighter than the previous model’s screen, along with something called Bravia HDR remaster tech.

The Cameras Are Exposed In More Detail

It was previously said that the Xperia 1 VI is going to come with a triple 48MP camera setup and that doesn’t seem to be disputed. There are more details on the cameras themselves though.

The primary lens will be a 24mm wide lens (which operates like 48mm with 2x optical zoom and uses an Exmor T for Mobile sensor), joined by a 16mm ultrawide and an 85 to 170mm telephoto with up to 7x zoom (very likely not optical). Sony makes a very bold claim that the phone will take photos that rival their full cameras. I’ll believe it when I see it though.

If you’re familiar, you’ll know that the Xperia 1 line comes with a Photography Pro, Videography Pro, and Cinema Pro app. That can be annoying to deal with as a regular user, so now, everything has been stuffed into a single new camera app which should make things easier to deal with.

More On The Specs Running The Show For The Xperia 1 VI

Unsurprisingly, the Xperia 1 VI will be running on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. We’re also going to be expecting an improved heat management system. The battery should remain at the 5,000 mAh mark with wireless charging in both directions.

This is one of the few flagships with a 3.5mm jack so Sony is adding a new high-performance chip to justify that even more with all the high-end audio codecs and standards like Hi-Res Audio, Hi-Res Audio Wireless, LDAC, and DSEE Ultimate.

Through Tecno, Gionee, Vivo, Google, and now Samsung, Ayomide has always been an Android enthusiast. His current partner in crime is a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can find him playing Candy Crush or Call of Duty: Mobile, watching movies, and he is a big fan of trivia and quizzes.
