Sony’s Xperia 1 VI has so far been rumored to sport a different aspect ratio for its screen, foregoing the long-standing 21:9. The new phone should be a little bit less tall and a tad wider, and apparently the company may even give up on the 4K resolution that no other smartphone maker has adopted.

So those are some interesting changes, but if you were also hoping for refreshed camera hardware, a new rumor claims you’ll be very disappointed. According to mumblings on Weibo, the Xperia 1 VI will ship with the exact same rear cameras as its predecessor.

So we’re talking a 24mm 48 MP main shooter with f/1.9 aperture and a 1/1.35″ type sensor, a 16mm 12 MP f/2.2 ultrawide with a 1/2.5″ sensor, and a 12 MP telephoto (85mm f/2.3, 125mm f/2.8) with a 1/3.5″ sensor and continuous zoom.

Those are, to the letter, the specs of the Xperia 1 V’s cameras. Of course, this doesn’t mean there won’t be software improvements – and those can have a huge impact on the images you shoot and the videos you record, but hardware-wise, the Xperia 1 VI is looking like more of the same.

That is, of course, if this random rumor from Weibo actually pans out – and that’s a pretty substantial “if”. So, as always, we’d caution you against taking this for granted. As we get closer to the Xperia 1 VI’s release, more and more rumors and leaks should turn up either confirming or disproving this.

We have heard that Sony will focus on AI-powered improvements to the auto mode with the Xperia 1 VI, so keep that in mind.
