OnePlus, despite being a relatively new smartphone company, did great work with the OnePlus Open, which quite a lot of people received very favorably. Of course, with such success, it’s not surprising for anyone to be ready for the OnePlus Open 2 to make its appearance this year.

Unfortunately for all the foldable lovers out there, it seems like OnePlus is going to skip a foldable attempt in 2024, instead keeping its effort locked in for 2025. However, considering potential upgrades, it might be worth the wait.

The OnePlus Open 2 Will Be A Reskin Of The Oppo Find N5

Oppo and OnePlus have a very cozy relationship with one another, which isn’t surprising since Carl Pei was an ex-Oppo man and Oppo now actually owns OnePlus. As a result, if you have a keen eye or you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that a lot of OnePlus smartphones are basically just rebranded versions of Oppo phones that preceded them by a few months.

In the case of the OnePlus Open 2, it seems that this will remain true, and in this case, it will be a rebranded version of the Oppo Find N5 (as many Chinese manufacturers do, the company is likely to entirely skip the “4” model).

However, according to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Oppo’s next foldable won’t be showing up until next year, which means the same fate for OnePlus’ version. The Oppo Find N3 came out in October last year, so that’s going to be a delay of a few months until Q1 2025 when the Find N5 is expected, after which we may then see the OnePlus Open 2.

The Wait Might Be Worth It, To Bring Several Upgrades To The Table

For people who were ready to wait the stretch between July when the Z Fold 6 is expected and October when it seemed like the OnePlus Open 2 was going to come, there must be some heavy disappointment in response to this news. However, it might be for the best, as this delay could allow for some pretty nice upgrades.

For instance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to come out in October and if the OnePlus Open 2 was to come out in the same month, it’d be very unlikely to come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. However, current rumors say that it will come with the next-gen chip, which could be a major trump card for the foldable over others that will be running on what will be last year’s chip at that point. For many, that alone is worth waiting a few months for the phone to come out.

In addition, it seems like the hinge will be getting upgraded, and with that, the device will get lighter. This could potentially help reduce the crease, which is one of the major battles for foldable manufacturers at the moment. There’s nothing specific regarding hardware beyond the chip, but it looks like the phone may get thinner and should keep the periscope telephoto camera in its arsenal.
