While Qualcomm fully unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 a couple of days ago, Samsung has only announced the existence of the Exynos 2400. The Exynos 2400 is expected to be used in the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra reportedly uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But how do they compare against each other?

Well, Samsung has expressed confidence in the performance of the Exynos 2400 compared to the competition. The company says that the Exynos chip has a better GPU than its competition.

Samsung claims Exynos 2400 has better GPU performance than competition

Park Yong-in, President of System LSI, seems confident about the performance of the Exynos 2400. He said, “It will do well because it has better GPU (graphics processing unit) performance than competitors.” These claims were made to South Korean reporters after he presented at the Semiconductor Expo 2023 keynote held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, earlier today.

Samsung revealed a few days ago that the Exynos 2400 has a 70% faster CPU and 14.7x faster NPU than the Exynos 2200. It is being reported that the Exynos 2400 was created with great care after the Exynos 2200 debacle that happened last year. The new chip also supports on-device Generative AI capabilities, offering text-to-image generation, even when the device is not connected to the internet.

Exynos 2500 confirmed to be a 3nm chip

System LSI President also confirmed that the flagship Exynos chip, which will launch next year, will use a 3nm fabrication process. While the name of the Exynos chip wasn’t revealed, it will likely be called the Exynos 2500, and it will use Samsung Foundry’s new 3nm GAA fabrication process, which is said to offer higher power efficiency and performance even against TSMC’s 3nm process.

It was also revealed that in the future, NPUs will be used for AI processing rather than GPUs. Currently, GPUs are being used in cloud servers for AI and Generative AI applications, but they are too costly and consume a lot of power. So, Park Yong-in claims that NPUs are better suited for AI use cases.

Author’s Note: While Samsung is coming out with tall claims for the Exynso 2400, it remains to be seen how it really performs against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Qualcomm’s new flagship chip appears like a truly great performer. Its benchmark figures were revealed, and its GPU performs better than even Apple’s A17 Pro chip while consuming less energy.

Exynos chips have historically performed slower than their Snapdragon counterparts, and given that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has surpassed everyone’s expectations, it will be really hard for the Exynos 2400 to match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in terms of CPU, GPU, and NPU.

Qualcomm will use both Samsung Foundry and TSMC to fabricate Snapdragon chips

Samsung Foundry has been under fire for a few years now due to an inferior semiconductor chip fabrication process compared to TSMC. Over the past couple of years, Samsung lost two big chip clients—Nvidia and Qualcomm—to TSMC. However, things might get better again, especially since Samsung Foundry’s 3nm and 2nm processes are attracting clients. Qualcomm […]

Samsung claims multiple firms will launch chips made using its 1.4nm, 2nm tech

While Samsung Foundry was the first company in the world to launch a 3nm chip fabrication technology and make it commercially available, it didn’t get any big chip clients like AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. While the South Korean firm shipped 3nm chips, they were relatively lower-end ASIC chips for a cryptocurrency firm. Things will change […]
