LG reveals A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3 OLED TVs for 2023Check out our complete coverage of CES 2024

With Samsung and Sony unveiling their well received QD-OLED TVs in 2022, all eyes return to the OG OLED manufacturer LG in 2023 to see how it will respond to this new competition. The anticipated A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3 ranges for 2023 appear as expected with the new models including updated processors, new brightness technology and Quick Media Switching VRR.

LG Electronics’ new top end 4K OLED evo G3 models are confirmed to use Brightness Booster Max to increase brightness, as will the 8K Z3 models, while the new C3 series will drop the ‘Max’ element and benefit from Brightness Booster instead.

Moreover, these Z3, G3 and C3 OLED evo models will also see the new Alpha9 Gen6 AI processor implemented while the full range of models is rounded out by the A3 and B3 series. This full 2023 lineup is the first to be officially certified by the HDMI Organisation for Quick Media Switching VRR (QMS-VRR) and there’s the latest webOS version which features the redesignedAll New Home’ user interface.

There are no new panel sizes for 2023 which means that the B3 comes in 55-, 65- and 77-inch sizes; the C3 will mirror last year’s 42-, 48-, 55-, 65- 77- and 83-inch models; the G3 series will have 55-, 65-, 77-, 83- and 97-inch displays (though in some territories, including US, the 97-inch G2 will carry over); while the Europe-only A3 series will feature 48-, 55-, 65-, and 77-inch versions. Lastly, the 8K Z3 models will continue with 77- and 88- screen sizes.

The smooth backed Gallery design of the G3 models which removes the thicker portion of the rear panel where the TV’s electronics are housed continues in a form that leaves zero visible gap between the TV and the wall and which has been renamed One Wall design.

Brightness Booster Max

LG’s Brightness Booster Max technology features a brand new lighting control architecture as well as light amplification algorithms to increase brightness by up to a reported 70 percent in the 55-, 65- and 77-inch G3 models when compared to ‘regular’ non OLED evo models such as the B2/B3. The brightness boost in the 83- and 97-inch models is around half of that in the smaller screen sizes.

The hardware architecture by which brightness is enhanced in Brightness Booster Max is being reported by FlatpanelsHD as Micro Lens Array (MLA), a new technology from OLED panel manufacturer LG Display which uses glass beads to collect scattered light and refocus it towards the viewer. Recent accounts had indicated uniformity issues would push the rollout of MLA into 2024, however, it now appears that LG Display has corrected these issues and the first TVs to feature this latest OLED tech will indeed be LG Electronics’ G3 series. No doubt all will be revealed officially at CES 2023. It will be interesting to see how the on paper brightness claims translate into the real world and of course as soon as we get our hands on a review model we’ll bring you the numbers to see if those claims bear fruit.

The newest iteration of LG’s AI-powered deep learning processor is the Alpha9 Gen6 with 4K versions appearing in the C3 and G3 models and the 8K variety housed in the Z3 TVs. There’s improved AI Picture Pro which offers better upscaling for greater clarity and uses image processing technology that recognises objects or faces ‘and refines them to have more lifelike HDR quality.’ Meanwhile improved Dynamic Tone Mapping can bring out depth and detail by adjusting brightness and colour in an even greater number of image blocks than ever before.

On the audio front, AI Sound Pro now ups the number of virtual channels that appear from the TV’s speakers from 7.1.2 to 9.1.2. As always, Dolby Atmos is supported and this year’s LG OLED TVs can be easily connected to the latest LG soundbars such that WOW Orchestra integrates the TV speakers seamlessly in with the soundbar’s audio channels. LG has also stated that DTS’s IMAX Enhanced format can be passed to its new SC95 soundbar – and presumably other manufacturer’s IMAX Enhanced compatible soundbars too.

Gamers continue to be served well by LG’s OLED TVs and the four HDMI 2.1a ports (two in the B3) now feature certification for Quick Media Switching VRR. QMS-VRR eliminates the short-term black screen when switching between content from sources with different refresh rates (when using an HDMI 2.1 QMS VRR certified source device). There’s also Game Optimizer which allows users to quickly adjust settings for Nvidia G-Sync, FreeSync Premium and variable refresh rate (VRR) as well as choose game genre display preferences.

There’s always a buzz at the start of the year when companies reveal their new TVs and new OLED models are especially anticipated. While we await further details from CES 2023, does LG’s new range of OLED TVs offer enough to encourage an upgrade for this year? Leave a comment in the thread and let us know your thoughts.
