Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 live photo confirms complete redesign

Samsung is working on a new tracker and the sequel to the Galaxy SmartTag. The Galaxy SmartTag 2 was spotted in the Bluetooth database a month ago, and now it emerged again, this time through an FCC application that contains a live photo of the device.

While the original Galaxy SmartTag has a rectangular shape with a small punch hole for keyrings, Samsung appears to have completely redesigned the Galaxy SmartTag 2. It has an oblong shape with a much bigger hole for keyrings — which looks big enough to put a finger through.

Then again, the live photo below has no point of reference, so the SmartTag 2 could be smaller than it looks in this example. Its dimensions remain unknown.

Interestingly, the Galaxy SmartTag 2, as seen in the photo above, doesn’t have a “2” in its moniker. The print says “Galaxy SmartTag,” but the FCC application confirms the “Galaxy SmartTag 2” name and the EI-T5600 model number.

Bluetooth LE and UWB connectivity confirmed

Two additional details confirmed by this Galaxy SmartTag 2 FCC application are Bluetooth LE and UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) connectivity. The Bluetooth LE and UWB antennas inside the SmartTag 2 were photographed by the regulatory agency, as seen below.

The original Galaxy SmartTag, which Samsung released in 2021, came in two versions. The standard one lacked UWB connectivity, while the SmartTag+ had this feature.

The lack of a reference to any “Plus” moniker in the FCC application suggests that there may be only one next-gen Galaxy SmartTag 2 variation boasting both Bluetooth and UWB connectivity. It’s a possibility, but take this with a pinch of salt.

There’s no concrete information as to when Samsung may want to announce the Galaxy SmartTag 2. But now that the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year is behind us and no new Tag was announced in Seoul, the company might decide to release this accessory early next year, if not before the 2023 holiday season. Only time will tell.
