Samsung first talked about its plans for GDDR7 memory for GPUs and servers in 2022. It would be utilized for AI chips, gaming consoles, workstations, and other high-performance devices. Samsung had confirmed in July last year that it would soon begin manufacturing the new DRAM chips.

The company is now reportedly gearing up to showcase the world’s fastest GDDR7 DRAM in February. This Graphics Double Data Rate (GDDR) memory will supercharge AI chips with its impressively high bandwidth, making it a crucial component for upcoming high-performance AI semiconductors.

AI chips will be supercharged by Samsung’s newest DRAM

Information about this new memory has been limited, but Samsung is now expected to talk more about GDDR7 at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuit Conference in San Francisco next month.

It was previously revealed that Samsung’s GDDR7 DRAM has a record-shattering bandwidth of 1.5TBps, a 40% increase over GDDR6. It relies on PAM3 and NRZ signaling to reach data rates as high as 37Gbps per pin. These new chips are also said to be 20% more power efficient compared to GDDR6 DRAM. The company is also creating low-voltage version of its new memory that will be utilized for laptops and other such devices.

Samsung has also improved heat management with the use of a new Epoxy Molding Compound in the packaging. This provides the chip with a high thermal conductivity and reduces thermal resistance by up to 70%, providing more stability even in high performance applications.

It may still take some time after Samsung unveils the chip next month for it to appear in GPUs and other products. NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series of flagship GPUs are expected to feature Samsung’s latest GDDR7 DRAM.
