Sony Boasts Major IoT Improvements with its Latest Chip – Phandroid

The growing framework of Wifi and internet-driven infrastructure in today’s consumer landscape has grown considerably in the past few years, and as a result we’ve seen more companies introduce products aligned with the “internet-of-things” or IoT for short. This covers products such as smart home equipment, telecom hardware, and more.

With that being said, Sony recently announced the availability of its new ALT1350 chipset, a new product courtesy of its division over at Sony Semiconductor Israel. Nohik Semel, CEO of Sony Semiconductor Israel states:

“Commercial adaptation of the ALT1350 SoC by industry leaders demonstrates strong demand for new generation LPWA technology solutions… This SoC enables applications for smart cities, logistics and asset trackers, connected health devices, and in the wearables market as it brings in an era of connected everything in which battery consumption is no longer a concern. We are excited to be working with our partners to bring this SoC to the market and help them build innovative products.”

The new chip does come with several new upgrades, including better battery life thanks to ultra-low power consumption, precision tracking made possible to location technology, as well as integrated technologies such as an application microcontroller unit (MCU) and sensor hub, in addition to new security features.

For those unfamiliar with the applications of such hardware, chips like the ALT1350 power devices such as asset trackers and utility meters, acting as a low-power cellular modem or mesh device, and even a router between cellular and mesh networks.
